Life as an Oliver Scholar is an enriching experience that begins in seventh grade and evolves throughout the high school years. One of the many unique and special qualities of becoming an Oliver Scholar is the personal, one-on-one guidance from counselors and mentors. Through the efforts of qualified staff, faculty and alumni, each Oliver Scholar receives an extraordinary academic and social support system. Pre High SchoolThe first two years of participation in The Oliver Scholars Program involves activities that prepare Scholars to succeed in an independent school. During seventh and eighth grade each scholar engages in a summer curriculum that reaches beyond ‘traditional’ class room academics to include community building activities as well as faculty advisory support. By the end of each five week summer course that takes place in seventh and eighth grades, the scholar has a solid understanding of the atmosphere, challenges and expectations they will encounter at an independent school. Deciding between attending an independent day school or boarding school, completing the school application, applying for financial aide and preparing for school interviews can be an arduous task. For Oliver Scholars these tasks are simplified with the assistance of a dedicated counselor that guides them through the school application and selection process. High School YearsDuring the high school years, Oliver Scholars continue to receive a level of support and guidance that is personalized to match the Scholar’s needs. This close counselor partnership is the underpinning for the future success that each Oliver Scholar experiences. Here is a look at the type of academic guidance, group activities and community efforts each Scholar experiences during high school. Counseling: Each Scholar receives a personal visit from their counselor at least three times a year. The settings for these visits are enjoyed in a casual atmosphere which usually involves the Scholar and counselor enjoying a meal together. Scholars will hear from their counselors throughout the year and always know the counselor can be contacted at any time. Counselors also add the special touch of sending each Scholar special ‘care’ packages. Guidance: On behalf of the Scholar, Oliver counselors meet with admission administrators, the Dean of Students and teachers. This level of support ensures each Scholar has a clear line of communication with school staff. Community: A ‘Community Service Day’ that brings together all Oliver Scholars is scheduled during Thanksgiving break. In a team environment, each Scholar experiences the positive effects of giving back to the community. And at the end of the day, Oliver Scholars meet-up for a fun activity with their peers. Special Events: Recreational and special events give Scholars, parents and Oliver staff the opportunity to socialize and have fun. Each winter Oliver hosts a holiday party and in the spring, each Scholar is invited to attend the “In Our Own Voice” conference. College Prep: Counselors make sure Scholars are prepared for the college application process. Scholars receive guidance with the admission process, financial aid application, college campus tours, and SAT preparation. |
